COMMUNITY SERVICE & OUTREACH

The Community Service and Outreach Committee strives to enrich the dental school experience for our members by providing meaningful service and outreach events throughout the year. One of the committee's goals is to connect our members with the rest of Case Western Reserve University's campus, the Cleveland community, as well as, communities across the nation. Our chapter's past events include health fairs, oral health screenings, Build-a-Mouth (BAM) events at local schools, oral hygiene instruction for the homeless and cancer patients, and non-dental volunteering opportunities. Our committee believes in making a positive impact in the world and will work relentlessly to provide those opportunities for our members and the community.

If you, or your organization, would like to team up with CWRU ASDA for a community service or outreach event, please contact CWRU ASDA's Secretary Libby Lyons at ebl35@case.edu

SATURDAY OF SERVICE AT FAIRFAX COMMUNITY GARDEN

Fairfax Community Garden needs volunteers to assist Cleveland Heights community members with a Fall cleanup and winterizing at the garden. Volunteers should dress for the weather, bring a filled water bottle, and wear comfortable, work-appropriate clothes and sturdy, closed-toed shoes that they don't mind getting dirty.

BAM!

Build A Mouth! Our most recent Build A Mouth event was a great time getting to teach local kids about proper oral hygiene. We presented the kids with hands on models to play with and read dental-themed storybooks to teach about caries development. Hopefully they learned a lot about their own personal health and the dental profession as well.

WEST SIDE CATHOLIC CENTER HEALTH FAIR

West Side Catholic Center (WSCC) is a resource center for the Cleveland community. They hosted a health fair on October 15, 2015 and asked multiple providers from across Cleveland to participate. As one of the providers, CRWU ASDA managed our own table at the health fair. Our roles for the event included providing general oral hygiene instruction, distribution of “goodie" bags, and referred participants to the WSCC nurses if they were seeking dental care.

BUILD A MOUTH @ ORCHARD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The goals for this event were to provide an open platform for first graders to learn about the basics of dentistry, what dentists do and learn proper oral hygiene procedures in an engaging and interactive manner. Kids learned about varying tooth morphology and the difference between anterior and posterior teeth. We emphasized the importance of cleaning all surfaces of the teeth, taught the students why they should floss and we demonstrated proper flossing techniques on their models. Through this hands-on event we provided an activity that was mentally stimulating and helped students develop the proper hand-eye coordination to effectively maintain good oral hygiene!

HOPE LODGE BINGO NIGHT

Thank you volunteers for coming to the Hope Lodge for Bingo Night. The visitors at Hope Lodge loved our event! Students were given the opportunity to talk to visitors about proper oral hygiene, especially in regards to combating xerostomia and other issues that patients undergoing chemotherapy/radiation therapy may experience.  We hope to see many of you at ASDA's other community service events. It's truly a rewarding experience!
