“I actually took a year off to do the public health program because I didn’t know if I wanted to become a dentist anymore; I had cold feet right before I came in and it was terrifying because that’s a lot of money to dish out for something you’re not entirely sure you want to do anymore. Probably within the first month [of dental school], things just kept happening to me to make me realize that it is all going to be okay and this is truly what I wanted. This wasn’t just a 17 year old’s dream; I realized that this was going to be my niche and this is what I’m going to do. It has been really comforting to see everything work out and make sense for me. First year has been really cool to learn how to provide care for another human. I’m realizing how important it is to take classes like ‘Heart & Lung’ and ‘Foundations of Life Science’ because we are not just treating a mouth, but we are treating a whole human. I’m excited to be that gatekeeper into someone’s health and to be able to guide them in the right direction. The sealant program was really unique because it has been a little taste of all of this. What I look forward to most as a dentist is that you get a huge family when you are a good provider; I’m excited to broaden my network of people I care about that care about me too.” - Lisa Mickey
